What goes wrong with DIY: the pivot pins on Famco throat dampers are under spring tension and can release unpredictably. The frame is bolted through the smoke chamber into the masonry lintel, and pulling the wrong bolt can drop the assembly or crack the firebox wall. In Oakland’s seismic zone, that lintel may already have micro-fractures you can’t see from below.
