DuraFlex Crown Repair Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Oakland Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible crown repair assemblies for most DuraFlex series in Oakland, with typical installed pricing between $340 and $680 depending on flue diameter and whether the wash cap needs rebuilding. Most DuraFlex crown repairs we book are completed same-day because we carry the common stainless collar sizes and refractory compounds on every truck. You’ll usually discover the problem during your first fire of the season, when water that seeped through a cracked crown over the rainy months starts dripping down the flue or you smell smoke in the attic.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns are not universal across the product line, and ordering the wrong collar diameter is the most common delay we see on Oakland jobs. The DuraFlex 316Ti stainless liner series uses a 1-inch crown collar with a 12-inch base flange, while the 304 alloy series and the older DuraFlex SW (solid wall) systems sometimes shipped with a 3/4-inch collar and a 10-inch base. The label is usually stamped on the inner rim of the existing crown collar, visible once you brush away the creosote buildup. If the label’s corroded, measure the flue liner outer diameter with a tape measure: 6-inch flue takes a 6 5/8-inch crown collar, 8-inch flue takes 8 5/8-inch.

We source OEM DuraFlex crown assemblies through Haven’s buying network, but we also stock HeatShield-compatible refractory crowns for situations where the original DuraFlex part is back-ordered or where the concrete wash cap itself has degraded past the point of a simple collar swap. The decision point is the condition of the crown deck: if the concrete is spalling or the reinforcement mesh is exposed, a collar-only repair will leak again within two seasons. In those cases we quote a full crown rebuild with a compatible DuraFlex collar integrated into the new pour.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing
  • Water stains on the firebox ceiling or smoke chamber. The DuraFlex crown collar is designed to shed water to the outside of the flue liner, but once the sealant between collar and concrete wash cap cracks, water tracks down the liner’s exterior. In Oakland’s wet winters, we see this most often on north-facing crowns that never fully dry between storms.
  • White efflorescence blooming on the exterior chimney brick below the crown. This salt deposit means water is getting past the crown and migrating through the masonry. With DuraFlex systems, the collar-to-liner seal is usually still intact, so the water is finding its way through the concrete wash cap itself, which means the crown repair needs to address both the collar and the cap structure.
  • Smoke odor in upstairs rooms or attic space during a fire. A separated DuraFlex crown collar can create a gap at the flue termination, allowing smoke to spill into the chimney cavity instead of exhausting fully. This is more common on the double-flue systems we service in the Montclair and Piedmont Pines areas, where two DuraFlex liners share a single wide crown.
  • Visible rust streaks down the chimney face from the crown edge. DuraFlex collars are stainless, but the fasteners and the underlying steel reinforcement in the concrete wash cap are not. Once water breaches the crown, that steel corrodes, and the rust runs down the masonry. By the time you see the stain, the internal damage to the crown deck is usually extensive.
  • The crown collar itself is loose or visibly shifted from center. Thermal cycling in Oakland, where a crown can hit 140°F in afternoon sun and drop to 50°F the same evening, eventually breaks the adhesive bond. A shifted collar no longer protects the flue liner termination, and wind-driven rain enters directly.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Repair Type Price Range (Installed) What’s Included
DuraFlex crown collar replacement only $340 - $480 OEM or HeatShield-compatible collar, high-temp sealant, exterior seal inspection, photo record
Crown collar + partial wash cap rebuild $480 - $580 Collar replacement, damaged concrete removal, new pour to 2-inch minimum thickness, mesh reinforcement
Full crown rebuild with integrated DuraFlex collar $580 - $680 Complete wash cap removal, form and pour new crown with proper overhang and drip edge, integrated collar, 5-year workmanship warranty

What drives the range is access, not parts markup. A single-story roof with a gentle pitch in the flatlands of Oakland takes half the time of a steep-pitch job in the hills where we need to set up scaffolding. Every quote is written before work starts, under Haven Standard Clause 1, and includes the exact part number, labor hours, and warranty terms. We don’t charge separately for the camera inspection that confirms the flue liner is intact beneath the crown, that’s Clause 4 of the Haven Standard, documented photo record included as standard since 2009.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check whether your DuraFlex crown collar is loose or shifted with binoculars from the ground, and you can verify the flue diameter from inside the firebox with a flashlight and tape measure. Don’t climb the roof to inspect it yourself. Crown work happens at height, on a surface that may be damp or covered in loose grit, and the repair requires working with wet refractory compounds that cure fast and don’t forgive a second attempt. A failed DIY crown repair usually costs more to correct than the original professional job because we have to remove the amateur sealant before we can bond new material.

The camera doesn’t speculate, and neither do I. If you’re seeing any of the symptoms above, call us at (628) 300-1701 and we’ll get a technician out with the right DuraFlex collar size on the truck. We carry 6-inch and 8-inch collars as standard stock, and we can source 7-inch or custom sizes through our Haven network within 48 hours if your system is non-standard.
