Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

HeatShield manufactures two distinct cap lines, and the part you need depends on which system is on your roof.

The HeatShield Pro-Series uses a stainless outer frame with a removable mesh screen; model numbers start with “HS-PS” followed by the flue dimension. The HeatShield Value-Line runs galvanized steel with a fixed screen, prefixed “HS-VL.” Both lines mount with a four-screw flue collar, but the Pro-Series collar is 304 stainless and the Value-Line is galvanized - mixing them causes galvanic corrosion in Oakland’s salt-air influence from the Bay, something we see on homes west of Highway 24.

To identify yours: the model stamp is laser-etched on the underside of the cap lip, visible from the roof edge with a flashlight. No stamp usually means a generic aftermarket cap was substituted, which voids the HeatShield liner warranty if water intrusion damages the cerfractory flue coating. Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

• Rust staining on the chimney breast or adjacent siding. HeatShield caps use 304 stainless in the Pro-Series, but the Value-Line’s galvanized coating breaks down in 4-7 years in Oakland’s marine climate. The rust you see is often the cap’s base ring bleeding onto masonry, not the flue itself - but it means water is already getting past the seal.
• Water dripping or damp odors during rain. The cap’s mesh screen should shed water outward; when the screen separates from its frame or the lid warps, water funnels straight down the flue. In Oakland’s older stock - the 1920s bungalows near Rockridge - this soaks the smoke chamber and can degrade the HeatShield liner bond from the inside.

• Spalling or freeze-thaw damage on the crown beneath the cap. You can safely check the model stamp and measure your flue opening from inside the firebox with a tape measure - round flues get diameter, rectangular gets width and depth. Do not climb the roof.
